W. Canada Seeding: Breaking the Logjam

After weeks 19-20 stalled progress, field conditions have finally opened up (#LetsGo). Producers are now in full-throttle mode with a realistic shot at adding 8-10% this week before moisture returns mid-week to NE Alberta and western Saskatchewan. If the weather window holds, durum & spring wheat should be largely wrapped before the next system arrives. Manitoba clawed back significant ground from its severe Week 20 deficit, and while it remains furthest behind, the upcoming 4-day window offers a critical chance to keep narrowing the gap.

• Narrow 4-day weather window opens for catch-up — GDPS model shows mostly precipitation-free conditions through next 96 hours across the Prairies, allowing field work to accelerate. However, a day 6–7 pattern shift introduces rain to SW Saskatchewan's delayed durum pocket, though most wheat and durum acres should still wrap up this week. The more acute risk lies in NE Alberta, where forecasted moisture likely delays canola on acres already furthest behind schedule.

• Seeding lags 8 points behind normal — 51% complete vs. 59% historical average (1990-2025), within 1 standard deviation below the mean.

• Canola faces steeper deficit than spring wheat — at 30% seeded vs. wheat's 60%, when both should be approaching two-thirds completion by late May.
• Yield risk remains benign for cereals but is elevated for oilseeds—though we are still nowhere near the danger zone if next week's planting push goes well.
